RS:X Youth European Championships 3 Races, 14 knots, 2 Discards… It’s Game on

First impressions count. Last ones do too. It was breeze on this morning with 14 knots out of the north east. So 3 races on the last full day of fleet racing.

Anastasiya Valkevich [BLR] sprang to life in the planing conditions to fire in a bullet in race 12 but sadly her hopes of a podium finish are gone. The story is quite the reverse for Saskia Sills [GBR]. I said yesterday that Basia Dmuchowska [POL] was going to have to have a really bad day to let Saskia on to the bottom step of the podium and she duly did today.

Basia’s scorecard for the day looks like this, 8th, 3rd and 12th. Her first two results outside the top 5.

While Saskia punched home with a bullet and a pair of seconds to give herself a one point advantage to defend in the medal race scheduled for 1145hrs tomorrow.

Veronica Fanciulli [ITA] just has to sail a conservative medal race to win. She has an 11 point advantage over Neomi Cohen [ISR] who likewise will probably be keeping an eye on the battle royal going on behind her between Saskia and Basia to ensure that her silver medal is assured.

Over in the men’s fleet, the top 3 look to have established their positions and with them comfortable cushions. Pawel Tarnowski [POL] burned off Kieran Martin [GBR]  today with a third and a pair of bullets compared to a bullet, 6th and a 3rd for Kieran.

Mattia Camboni [ITA] may be 21 points off second place having had two double figure results today but he hopes that he has done enough to secure bronze overall here in Pirita. One thing is certain. He will be the RS:X U17 European Champion by a handsome margin. Nikita Tsirkun [BLR] is more than 100 points back.

It’s game on for third. Max Bushell [GBR] is just 7 points adrift of Atrem Javadav [BLR] so for him at last the 13th race will be super important

Saskia is sure to take the U17 Trophy in the youth women’s fleet from her twin sister Imogen who will also be sailing in the medal race unlike Blanca Alabau who is back in 13th tonight. Her big sister Marina will be vying for a medal in the 2012 Olympic Regatta coming up at the end of the month so here is a dynasty in the making.

This has been an excellent venue. A Well organized championship with friendly volunteers and an efficient race management team

Put Estonia on your list of countries to visit. You won’t be disappointed.
